Destinie Graves scored twice to lift No. 3 Tates CreeK to a 2-1 OT victory over No. 5 Lexington Catholic in an early season match-up of state soccer powerhouses.
Lexington Catholic took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a goal by Josie Metzger before the Commodore got things going in the second. Regulation ended with the game knotted 1-1. Graves buried her second goal of the night with time winding down in the "golden goal" overtime period.
The victory improved Tates Creek's record to 6-0-1. The Knights fell to 2-2-2.
Before the game, Tates Creek coach Bo Lankster said the rankings don't mean much right now, but the game's importance stems from its district tourney seeding ramifications.
"I don't think that either team is worried about gaining momentum or confidence. We both play difficult schedules and will want to be playing our best soccer in October," he said. "Its more important from a fans perspective and the high rankings are kind of a selling point to get them to come. The bigger picture for our two teams will be that it's a district match and will determine seedings for the district tournament."
