His assist to turnover ratio, which is a big statistic if the ball is in your hand, is nothing to write home about.
The 6-foot-2 inch 189 pound freshman has 72 assists and 49 turnovers going into Wednesday nights game with Auburn. If Teague never gets to a 3 to 1 assist to turnover ratio for the season, if his numbers for the rest of the season are better, that could be a huge plus for UK.
Even as a McDonald's All-American, coming into Kentucky and bossing people around because you are the point guard, isn't easy from day one.
"Yeah, it was kind of tough at first," says Teague.
"You know older guys that have been here longer. They know the ropes and they know things. So, it's kind of hard to just come in here and say I'm a leader. It takes time. You have to work at it."
Teague like Brandon Knight last year thought of himself first in high school. That's natural. That is also a huge habit to break. It's not easy. Change goes against everything you have learned as a player.
"Yeah, I've always been used to scoring and things like that but I'm getting used to it playing with guys like Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb and (Anthony) Davis. We have a great team. You have to get everyone involved. Find them first and then look to score."
Cal is doing more coaching from the sidelines to help out Teague. He anticipates by March he'll be able to do less because Teague will be able to understand more. Teague is getting closer to the point where he is thinking what Cal is thinking before Cal says it.
"Yeah, I know, I kind of know what he wants me to do. Now I'm used to it. He's been telling me all year so I'm trying to keep listening and figure it out."
When Teague gets to the point where he isn't figuring it out anymore because he just does it, the light bulb will be shining and the Cats could be great.
