The Mercer County coroner says 19-year-old Sophia Dawn Ammons of Harrodsburg was killed Saturday morning when the GMC truck she was driving struck a cargo train along the railroad crossing of Bohon Road.

The grandmother of the victim tells LEX 18, Sophia Ammons was a high school graduate and was considering to go to college soon. She calls Sophia a great personality, and a wonderful spirit.

The Sheriff's Department is investigating whether the flashing lights at the intersection were working properly.

The coroner says Ammons was likely momentarily blinded by the sun in her eyes, and simply didn't see the train coming.
