A Jessamine County high school senior has been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after crashing into a tree in Lexington Tuesday morning.
Jessamine County Schools Superintendent Kathy Fields said 18-year-old Abigail Morguelan is in an induced coma at the University of Kentucky Hospital, and that her father is "extremely hopeful" about the situation.
Morguelan is a senior at East Jessamine High School, Fields confirmed. She's also part of the Show Choir Music program at West High because East doesn't hold the program.
The accident happened on Spears Road near Jacks Creek Pike right by the Jessamine County line. Morguelan's father said the teen was on her way to school when the accident happened.
Officials say the victim lost control of her car traveling down Spears Road and hit a tree. Investigators say they don't know exactly what caused the accident.
Staff and students back at the school are still coping with the news of the crash.
"Students are very concerned," said superintendent Kathy Fields. "It's a very close knit community and a very close knit school, so of course everyone is very concerned and everyone is starting to send their well wishes toward the student and her family."
