Matthew Mitchell told his team that he loved them during his pregame pep talk before the SEC Championship tipped off against Tennessee.
Linnae Harper off the bench exploded as soon as she entered the game. The freshman hit her first four shots and had 9 points as UK takes an 18-8 lead.
Jennifer O'Neill was looking more to pass than shoot. O'Neill gets her third assist, setting up DeNesha Stallworth. UK goes up 29-24.
UK leads at the half 38-32.
DeNesha Stallworth leads everyone with 12 points. Linnae Harper has 11.
UK is shooting 53%. Tennessee is at 44%.
Janee Thompson with a strong drive that turns into a three point play. UK leads 46-40.
Makayla Epps with a terrific bucket as UK hangs on to a 51-48 lead.
It was a very physical game. Samari Walker with a hard foul that turned into technical fouls to four players, two from each team. Samarie Walker and DeNesha Stallworth for UK and Cierra Burdick and Jasmine Jones. The two free throws gave Tennessee their first lead since it was 4-2. Tennessee goes up 52-51.
How would UK respond? DeNesha Stallworth with a 3, UK goes up 54-52.
With UK up 59-54 with five minutes to go, Matthew Mitchell called time.
Tennessee made a great comeback. Freshman Jordan Reynolds with a drive that UK fans thought should have been a charge. It turned into a three point play as Tennessee ties the game at 59.
With UK down 67-65, Meighan Simmons made a layup with 20 seconds to go. Simmons, who led Tennessee with 17 points, added two more free throws as Tennessee hangs on to win the SEC Tournament Championship 71-70.
DeNesha Stallworth played like a champion. She led everyone with 21.
Linnae Harper and Jennifer O'Neill had 12 points making all 9 of her free throws, but was 1 for 6 from the field.
UK shot 44%. Tennessee hit 43%.
