Deputies arrested three people after customers at a Boyle County grocery store noticed two children apparently suffering from neglect and abuse.
Officials say Vince Peyton, 47 and Joyce Wofford, 32, showed up at Peckerwood Grocery Store in Junction City last Thursday with a 6-month-old and a 2-year-old child. Customers in the store told investigators the adults appeared drunk. They also noticed that the children were not properly dressed for the weather, and the 6-month old appeared to have several injuries on her and an overflowing diaper.
Deputies say Peyton and Wofford left the store with the 2-year-old, but left the younger child in the care of customer who lived nearby. That person called friends and took the child to the hospital. Deputies say witnesses told them the baby was wheezing and appeared she wasn't properly fed.
Hospital officials notified the Boyle County Sheriff's Office. The 2-year-old was later brought to the hospital for examination.
When the children's mother showed up at the hospital, she told investigators she left the kids in the care of Wofford and Peyton earlier in the day.
Police arrested Vince Peyton, Wofford and Chastity Peyton, 21, on Sunday and charged them with two counts each of criminal abuse of a child under age 12. endangering the welfare of a minor and wanton endangerment.
Social Services placed the children in the care of another relative after their release from the hospital.
