A trio from Atlanta has cashed around $9,000 in government disability checks at the Williamsburg Walmart over several days.
LEX 18 has surveillance video of one of the suspects. When the thieves came back to cash more fraudulent checks, Walmart security notified police, and officers tracked down the suspects.
In their vehicle police found fake IDs and other checks totaling nearly $17,000.
"If you look at the IDs, there were two different men cashing the checks. All the names on the checks were female names," said Chief Wayne Bird of Williamsburg Police Department. "They target places like Walmart because they're busy and don't check IDs."
The multi-state check fraud scheme has made its way to Kentucky via i-75. Police say the trio hit the Corbin Walmart and two Walmarts in Tennessee. The U.S. Secret Service is investigating trying to figure out how they got the real checks.
Police say they believe the three Georgia suspects are a part of a bigger ring.
