The trial of a man accused of raping a woman near the campus of Spencerian College last year, among other charges, ended Tuesday night in a hung jury.
Bobby McGhee was arrested in August, 2010 for the sexual assault on that allegedly happened near Eastland Parkway. Three hours after a jailhouse interview with LEX 18, jail officers added charges of indecent exposure and harassment, and McGhee was also later charged with robbing a wheelchair bound amputee.
McGhee had been charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, second-degree robbery and being a persistent felony offender.
McGhee said in the jailhouse interview with LEX 18 after his arrest that life as a registered sex offender meant walking around with a target on his back. But the then-35-year-old says life behind bars since being accused of raping a woman hasn't gotten any easier.
McGhee claimed he had nothing to do with the rape on Eastland Parkway. He says the incident at the jail with the female inmate was simply a misunderstanding as he was changing into his jail-issued jumpsuit.
"As far as me exposing myself the way they said, I didn't," said McGhee. "No, it wasn't like that. Actually, I just got buck naked, took off all my clothes and tried to give them to the guard."
he next day, more bad news for McGhee. Lexington Police charged him robbing a wheelchair bound amputee at his home on Jennifer Road a day before the alleged rape.
The victim claimed that McGhee pushed him up against a wall and stole his wallet. McGhee denied it, though he does admit there's a history of bad blood between the two, and says the victim jumped the gun in calling. "Every time he sees me out there, he's panicking and stuff like that."
McGhee said as soon as he heard about sexual assault on Eastland Parkway and saw the composite sketch of the suspect, he called his probation officer to tell her it wasn't him.
