A federal prison in McCreary County remains under lockdown after two guards suffered stab wounds Monday evening.

Officials at the United States Penitentiary McCreary say the guards were stabbed just after 5 p.m. A prison spokesperson told the Associated Press that the guards were conducting routine cell searches when an inmate attacked them.

The victims were taken to the hospital with what officials called serious but non-life threatening injuries. They were later released after treatment.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons say they have an investigation team on site. They expect to keep the facility under lockdown until sometime Tuesday.

USP McCreary is a high security prison housing men.
