Two people died in a McCreary County house fire early Sunday morning. The victims were a 17-year-old and his caretaker.

Neighbors say everything seemed quiet and normal at 3 a.m. When they went to bed. But by 4 a.m. the house across the street was fully engulfed in flames.

Four people lived in the home, but only two of them made it out alive.

"The fire department located two subjects inside the house that hadn't been able to get out on their own," says Trooper Craig Reed with Kentucky State Police.

That juvenile, a 17-year-old boy, died on the way to the hospital. Most of the pets that lived in the home also died in the fire. Fire investigators spent most of the day sifting through the charred building, piecing together how the fire started.

Fire investigators are still working the case but at this point they suspect a newly purchased wood stove is the likely culprit.

Neighbors declined to talk on camera, but say the four people who lived there were not related, but they were like family.

"It's always traumatic to know that this can happen and common in the winter time for house fires," says Trooper Reed.

Police are not releasing the identities of the victims until their families have been notified.
