An Estill County family is mourning the death of two women killed in a crash that also left two men fighting for their lives.
The car the four family members were in slammed into a tree Friday around 11 a.m. on Pea Ridge Road in Irvine.
Nancy Moore, 45, and her niece, Laura Jones, 29, were pronounced dead on the scene.
"I heard two ambulances go by and I knew something was wrong with someone in the family," said Moore's sister, Wanda Thacker. "I'm thinking, oh God, my baby's gone. I'll never hear [Laura] laugh again."
"I can't describe it. It's hard," Laura's father, Darrell Loperesto told LEX 18. "Special. That's the only way you can describe [Laura] because she had many friends and everything and she tried to do [good] for one another."
Nancy Moore's brother-in-law, Darrell Spicer, 50, another passenger in the vehicle was airlifted from the scene to UK Hospital with "life threatening" injuries. Spicer's 23-year-old son, Darrell Spicer Jr., the driver of the vehicle was also flown to UK. Spicer Jr. is expected to survive.
Family members told LEX 18 that witnesses said Spicer Jr. saw something in the road, possibly a dog, and swerved to avoid hitting it. They said he lost control and slammed into the tree.
"God's taking us one by one and now he's taking them two by two. But he has a reason for everything and I'm not gonna question him," Thacker said.
State Police are not commenting on the cause of the crash. They have said that remains under investigation and toxicology results are pending.
Funeral arrangements for Moore and Jones are pending.
