James Young picture is perfect....we have two in the system...one he's dunking
When it comes to potential, Mike DeCourcy, the basketball guru for Sporting News, whose been close with Cal since they both lived in Pittsburgh has always believed this team can be special.
"I've always believed that the potential for this team is to win the National Championship," says Mike DeCourcy. "There are only a handful, or a handful and a half of teams that have that as their ceiling. And this is one of them."
The term we've heard Cal use a ton is that this is a process. That's what's going on with James Young. What he can do and can't do on the court.
James Young was the National Player of the week for his 18 points and 10 rebounds against Louisville. But he didn't start out that way.
"James Young started 0 for 6 from the floor in that game. And there was a reason he was 0 for 6 because every shot he took was an awful shot. He made his 7th shot, and the reason he made it was because it was a great shot. When he takes high quality shots, he's a high quality shooter. When he takes bad shots, he's not Michael Jordan."
For Young, like so many freshman, the shot selection and the timing of the shot is huge.
"There is a time in every offense when you need somebody. The clock is running out, okay James you be the guy, go get it. But James takes those shots in the first seven seconds of the shot clock. If he takes those in the last seven, wonderful. He's one of those guys that can do that."
Which is one of many reasons why it could be a great March for UK.
