Max Smith will have surgery on his ankle. The ligament damage which happened in the opening series against South Carolina will keep him out indefinitely.
UK will try and get a medical redshirt for Max which would give him another season to play college ball.
"I'm a little bit smarter than some of you guys think," said Joker when talking about if Max might be able to get an extra year on the field.
As far how Max was playing, he was one of the top sophomore quarterbacks, hitting 68.7% of his passes. Plus he was averaging 243 yards a game. He threw 8 TD passes with 4 interceptions.
"Guy was playing at a high level, as high as anyone I've been around at this phase of his career," says Joker.
Obviously Max, who wasn't available to the media and is upset over the injury.
"He's down. He's worked his tail off to get in position to play major college football," said Phillips
Both Patrick Towles and Jalen Whitlow are going to play quarterback. Towles, who Joker said is "excited" will no longer redshirt. Whitlow is the starter.
Joker was doing his best to take a positive spin on the latest setback which has UK playing two freshman quarterbacks against Mississippi State.
"I think it is exciting. The team we are about to play doesn't know what we are about to get. We don't know what we are about to get."
