Update: The Fayette County Coroner says 41-year-old Jason Baines of Lexington was pronounced dead at UK Hospital at 6:33 pm, after he was hit by a car on Midland Avenue while crossing the street on his bike at 6:15 pm. It happened in front of the Lexington Herald-Leader building near East Main Street.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit was on scene, and blocked off Midland Avenue to traffic as they investigated. Police say it appears Baines, who was not wearing a helmet, was trying to cross Midland Avenue from Short Street where there is no crosswalk. Police say he biked through two cars stopped to let cars through, and was hit by a car in the other lane.
A group of witnesses came to the cyclist's aid, and two helped give him CPR until first responders arrived.
Police say no charges will be filed at this time.
