Officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office say a 16-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself Saturday.
Officials say Austin McBride's mother called 911 around 7 a.m. The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was flown to Kosairs Children's Hospital and pronounced dead later that afternoon.
Deputies say McBride's stepfather told them he and Austin were getting ready to leave for a shooting competition. His mother said she stepped out of the shower and heard her son yelling. When she looked out a back window, she saw McBride lying on the ground next to an SUV. Officials say it appears Austin was cleaning the .22 caliber handgun when it went off.
Officials say results from an autopsy performed Sunday were consistent with the family's story.
Family members say McBride was familiar with gun safety.
