Two boys safely made it out of a rain-swollen Scott County creek after a harrowing plunge Wednesday.
Caleb Mahoney, 9, and his 10-year-old friend Peyton say they were looking for turtles near a dam on Elkhorn Creek near Degaris Mill Road. Mahoney says he looked away and when he turned back around, Peyton was in the rushing water. Mahoney jumped in after his friend, and the current pushed them both under.
"The current pushed both of us off. It dragged us under for about maybe two minutes," Mahoney said. "I pretty much thought I was dying. I pretty much asked God give me some strength."
Mahoney caught up with Peyton, gave him his life vest and swam back for help.Georgetown police say an adult nearby jumped into the creek to help Peyton and neighbors formed a human chain to pull both from the creek.
Peyton was taken to the hospital. Officials did not release any information on his condition.
