Cal wants to control the mindset of his players and True Blue Fans. And why not? It's working.
Dreaming big for Cal became part of his life a long time ago.
"It started with my mother," Cal told the Tip-Off luncheon in Louisville. "My mothers comment all the time was think and dream beyond your surroundings."
"Think like a king. It's hard for us to think like a king would think."
For Cal, that's how you become number one.
"My vision is at the end of the year, we'll be on one of those teams up at bat slugging it out (for a national championship)."
He likes what he sees from this years team.
"More I'm around the kids, the more I realize they really want this."
"Let's chase that National Title and get six guys drafted."
To 99% of True Blue fans, winning the NCAA Championship is all that matters. Cal continues to push what he's said from day one as UK's coach, that this is a players first program.
"I would be disappointed if we win a National Title and no one is drafted."
Cal called this years team "unconventional."
"We have six starters. I don't know what I'm going to do. We may have seven starters, what am I going to do?"
As far as the makeup of the players, that makes Cal smile.
"And they are wonderful young people. It is a family."
Cal made comments on a number of players.
"Terrence Jones is finishing first in all the runs we do. Can you imagine?"
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had seven blocks in a practice.
"If you thought Deandre Liggins played hard and slashed, wait till you see Michael Kidd-Gilchrist."
Cal had a reminder to True Blue Fans about how they act. He sees the heat the football team takes.
"If you are having fun, my team is having fun. If my team is having fun they will want the season to continue. If you beat them down, do they really want to continue you playing?"
As far as the rotation, it will be bigger than last season. It could be as high as 9 players.
"If you can't help us win, you're not out there."
"We are chasing greatness."
"This thing is about raising the standard and chasing it."
"We are chasing that mountain top."
Cal calls that the "Kentucky effect."
