The Williamsburg Police Department has announced an investigation into the attempted murder of one of its officers.
Officials say that the case was originally opened in early August, after investigators determined that somebody tampered with Officer Shawn Jackson's personal vehicle in an attempt to kill him. The tampering apparently took place at Jackson's home in the early morning hours of July 30. Later that day, Jackson was driving his pickup north on US-25W when he lost control and ran off the roadway.
"Luckily I was going at a very low rate of speed and was not injured and did not hurt anyone," Jackson said.
Police say they believe the attempt to kill Jackson was possibly a murder for hire motivated by a fear that the officer posed a threat to drug users and drug trade in the northern end of Whitley County, where Jackson lives.
Investigators say they do have some leads.
"There are persons of interest; people who may live in an area near Officer Jackson."
Police ask that anyone with information about the case call Chief Wayne Bird or Officer Jackson at (606) 549-6038.
