A narrow winding road hampered Madison County firefighters as they responded to a blaze Wednesday afternoon.

Fire destroyed a mobile home along Poosey Ridge Road. Nobody was home at the time, but the owner says he lost everything, including pet birds and a puppy.

Firefighters say the narrow, curvy road with steep drop-offs made it difficult to get crews to the burning home.

"It took about 20, 25 minutes to get here. When it's that kind of time, there's nothing you can do with it. It is what it is," Madison County fire chief Jim Cox said.

By the time firefighters arrived, the mobile home was already beyond saving.

"I feel bad for the owners. You know, there's nothing we can do. It's our job to do what we can. If you show up and there's no hope, it kind of ruins the mood, you know?" Cox said.

There were no reported injuries.

Firefighter continue to investigate the cause of the blaze. They say they don't expect arson.
