There aren't many student-athletes like Patrick Patterson.

You know that old line about how when it seems to be too good to be true, it usually is? Patterson is the exception to the rule.

Talk to his parents, and you can see where it comes from.

"Happy, proud, ecstatic," says Tywanna Patterson. "I'm very proud of him."

Life hasn't always been a bowl of cherries for the Pattersons. No parent is happy when their son is struggling, which at times everyone did when Billy G. was here.

"Those two years seems like it was forever ago. It seems like a little memory is gone. And winning this year has healed a lot of wounds."

You can't blame her. Talking about Billy G. isn't a favorite topic. Billy G. has called the Pattersons.

"I don't think we want to talk about Billy. But, I wish him well. Patrick is a bigger man than most people are."

"And, I am glad he is okay with everything. Going through the last two years with him here made him the person he is today."

That wasn't the answer that most True Blue Fans were expecting. Even Patrick gives Billy G. some credit.

"My first two years here were extremely tough, but it shaped me into the player that I am," says Patrick.

"And, I thank him for that."

So, it's possible to have something good came out of a bad situation, but it's one of those deals you hope to never live through again.
