Police are investigating an early morning assault near the University of Kentucky campus.

Police say a woman was walking along East Maxwell Street, near Arlington Avenue, around 3 a.m. Friday, when a man attacked her. Officers say the victim told them the man tried to pull down her pants. She pulled a pocket knife to defend herself and suffered some cuts during the attack. The man took off running west on Maxwell Street.

The woman ran to her nearby apartment, and police and EMS met her there. She was taken to the hospital to get checked out.

Police brought in a K9 and swept the area. The dog found some drops of blood. Investigators say they aren't sure if they belong to the victim or her attacker, and it's possible he might have suffered an injury as well.

Police only got a vague description of the attacker, saying he was a white male wearing a dark hoodie.
