A woman died in a house fire in Lexington Thursday night.
Witnesses reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of a home on the corner of Copper Run Road and Calevares Drive, off Clays Mill Road, around 11:15 p.m. Firefighters say a man inside made it safely out, but a woman did not. Neighbors say the man and woman were husband and wife. They say she was ill and her husband recently took a job working at home to care for her.
Firefighters say the man tried to go back into the burning house and rescue his wife, but the flames were too intense.
Officials say EMS took the man to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting the fire. EMS took one firefighter to the hospital to be checked out for burns. The second injured his ankle.
Firefighters have not released any information on the cause of the blaze.
