The Woodford County High School wrestling team rode the shoulders of six individual champions to take the Seventh Region wrestling championship over the weekend.
Woodford lost to Henry Clay in the regional duals last week and looked like a team intent on making a point. The Mat Jackets finished with 223.5 points. Franklin County took second with 207.5 points, and Henry Clay finished a distant third with 90 points.
The six Mat Jacket individual champions were Trevor Lawson at 106 pounds, Nathan Boston at 113 pounds, Kyle Lawson at 132 pounds, Max Andreoni at 138 pounds, Jordan Doyle at 152 pounds and Courtney Wyatt at 168 pounds.
The Woodford winners included some youngsters, with two eighth graders (Kyle Lawson and Andreoni) and a seventh grader (Trevor Lawson) earning individual titles. Tucker Hurst was the runner up in the 120-pound weight class.
Henry Clay standout Michael Whalen won the title at 120 pounds. He was the state champ in the 106-pound weight class last year, and moved up two classes for the 2013 season.
The other individuals champions were Angel Vasquez of Lafayette at 126, Tevon Clay of Franklin County at 146, Erik Pina of Franklin County at 170, Jake Fooks of Bourbon County at 182, Jose Rebolledo of Franklin County at 195, Tucker Fair of Madison Central at 220 and Landon Young of Lafayette at 285.
