A Montgomery County songwriter is hoping that a haunting new folk song that has become a hit on YouTube could lead to answers in a Menifee County murder that has remained unsolved for two years,

Fred Brown wrote the song, recorded by Sasha Colette, called "The Ballad Of Nicole Penix Vanzant," which details the 2009 murder of the 27-year-old mother whose killer has never been found. Her remains were found by hikers in the Red River Gorge three months after she was reported missing.

"I kind of felt this could be a good thing if it stood a chance of drawing out someone that knew something," said Brown, who worked at the Bath County News-Review at the time and covered the story of the murder for the paper. "When somebody does something as terrible as this they could do it again."

Brown said Vanzant's parents support the song and hope it will help produce new information in their daughter's murder.

"It just goes to show you that with a song with a good purpose behind it and there's the idea of justice behind that people will pay attention," said Colette.
