Homicide Investigation Underway In Laurel County

Posted: Updated:
A man and woman are dead after a call for a house fire turns into a homicide investigation in Laurel County. The victims have been identified as 62-year-old Donnie Jackson and his wife, 58-year-old Sharon Jackson.

When firefighters first arrived to the burning home on Slate Ridge Road in Lily Sunday morning, they were prepared for a rescue.

"After we arrived, we were greeted by one of the family members who said that someone was still in the home. We started to do our investigation and to attack the rescue and two subjects were located inside the residence," said Lily Fire Department Chief Paul Collins.

But when they pulled the victims outside, they realized this was something much more violent. Investigators say the victims had gunshot wounds.

Laurel County Sheriff's deputies and several other agencies were then called to the scene to begin investigating what they're calling a double homicide.

"It looks like a fire was set after the victims were shot and that fire was possibly set to cover up the fact that two deaths had occurred in the residence," said Gilbert Acciardo from the Laurel County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies say they're not sure what time the victims were shot. They say no one in the area heard any gunshots, but the call for a fire came just after 10 a.m.

"The grandson is actually who came home and found the victims and the fire. Other than that, that's about basically what we have right now. We have just started the investigation. A lot of work to be done on this," said Acciardo.

Right now, there are no suspects. If you have any information, call police. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The  Laurel County Crime Stoppers is offering $1,000 to anyone that helps them solve this crime.
