Dog Brutally Killed In Menifee County, Investigation Underway

 A dog was found brutally killed along East Fork Road in Menifee County Saturday afternoon. Now, the Menifee County sheriff along with animal control officials hope to find the men responsible.

It's an animal abuse investigation the Menifee County sheriff says he's taking very seriously, after hearing disturbing details from an eye witness. LEX18 spoke to that man who asked us not to reveal his identity.

"We've got pictures of the dog. You can tell it's been dragged and if you go back to the road there's blood for almost a quarter of a mile," he said. 

"The dog had pretty horrific injuries, appeared to have been dragged and had been thrown in the bushes," said Renee Nichols from the Menifee County Animal Shelter. 

Not too far from the body of the one-year old hound, a bloody tire iron was was found. Officials believe it was used to beat the dog

"It just takes a sick person to do it, it really does. It's a helpless animal and they can't do anything when they're being dragged down the road," said the witness. 

"I can't imagine what would make somebody do this, I really can't," said Nichols. 

The assistant director of the Menifee County shelter says there's no excuse to do this to a dog. If you have a pet or know someone who doesn't want theirs, all you have to do is come and drop it off here or they'll come to your house to pick it up.

"There's always somebody who would love that dog," said Nichols. 

The witness was able to get a license plate number of the vehicle and the Menifee County sheriff  says he hopes to be making an arrest soon.
