Soldier's Homecoming Surprises Kids At School

Posted: Updated:

One 12-year-old boy in Hardin County got a big surprise Wednesday when his normal math class turned into a homecoming he will never forget.

It was hard for Travis Field and his siblings to have their dad serve overseas. He had been in Kuwait for six months when he made the trek home and decided to surprise his kids at school.

“I heard, ‘Is Travis Field here?’ and I was like, ‘ok, what are they calling me for?’ I turn around. I see my dad and I am just like, 'Oh my Goodness,’" said Travis Field. “I was out of breath. It was just so amazing."

"Whenever Travis or Chase is feeling down I go in there and comfort them, say, 'Hey it's going to be ok. It's such and such more days, we can get through it,’" said Cecilia Field, Travis’ sister.

Their father, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Field has been in the Army for 18 years now. 10 years ago he went to Iraq.

“If he leaves a year, I don't think I could take it,” said Travis.

Travis and Cecilia weren’t the only ones surprised at school, after their dad signed them out they went to the gym of Rhineyville Elementary to surprise seven-year-old Chase.

“Excited and really happy, excited and with him,” said Chase on what it was like to see his dad after six months.

“He's the best dad we could ever ask for. He's serving his country well, but he still makes time to come home for us,” said Cecilia. “It makes us feel proud to be able to call ourselves his children."

Lieutenant Colonel Field will now be stationed at Fort Know and his children cannot wait to wrestle with him and go camping.
