CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Labor says a contractor for projects at federal buildings in Kentucky and West Virginia has paid more than $213,000 in back wages to seven employees. The Labor Department says in a news release that B&F Contracting Inc. made the payments to resolve violations of federal law. The company agreed to hire an accountant to oversee its compliance with the law and to provide copies of payroll and work time records.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A legislative seat formerly held by a Republican Kentucky lawmaker who killed himself following sexual assault allegations will likely be filled with a special election. Dan Johnson was a Republican member of the Kentucky legislature from the 49th district, which includes portions of Bullitt County just south of Louisville. Johnson was first elected in 2016 and was halfway through his first term in office. State law requires the seat to be filled by a special election.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - As sexual assault and harassment allegations sweep through statehouses around the country, no place has been impacted quite like Kentucky. Kentucky's GOP House Speaker has resigned his leadership position after acknowledging he secretly settled a sexual harassment claim. And a freshman Republican lawmaker killed himself this week after allegations surfaced that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl in his basement. Democrats settled a $400,000 sexual harassment lawsuit three years ago.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Three years after the Obama administration lowered the allowable limits for miners' exposure to coal dust, the Trump administration has brought the standards up for review. Federal mining regulators indicated Thursday that they are reconsidering rules meant to protect underground miners from breathing coal and rock dust _ the cause of black lung _ and diesel exhaust, which can cause cancer. An advocate for coal miners said that's "a very bad signal."
