Making A Difference: Kentucky's First Home For Female Veterans Opens In Lexington

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) On Friday, Kentucky’s first home for female veterans opened up in Lexington.

The home on Deporres Avenue will serve as a transitional home for previously homeless veterans.

The property has been under renovation for months. The Lexington non-profit “Lady Veterans Hands for Hope” turned the house into a home.

“It's about healing. It's about truly giving them a space,” said Phyllis Abbott with Lady Veterans Hands for Hope.

Four previously homeless women veterans will live in the home at a time. They will receive specialized counseling and training to help them get back on their feet.

“I anticipate fully that they will be very happy, secure individuals that will have a great future that they're entitled to. Because they gave and served our country and they deserve the best,” said Abbott.

Community members such as Representative Andy Barr and Mayor Jim Gray were there for the official opening of the home.

“We're committed as a community where every veteran is housed and treated with respect and the dignity that they have earned,” said Gray.

The women in the home will live there for up to a year at a time.

Lady Veterans Hands for Hope plans to open more transitional homes in Lexington and across the state.
