Making A Difference: Home For Female Veterans To Open In Clark County

Posted: Updated:

CLARK COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) The same group that opened Lexington’s first ever female veterans home plans to open another one in Clark County.

Lady Vets Connect is a Lexington non-profit committed to serving female veterans.

In July, they held the grand opening of Kentucky’s first home for female veterans in Lexington. The home was gifted to the organization and the group completely renovated it.

Now they are in Clark County where they are transforming an old school into a home for dozens of female veterans.

The group has acquired Winchester’s old Trapp Elementary School. The facility has sat vacant for two years now.

When it is completed in mid-2017, it will house as many as 35 female veterans and their children.

Lady Vets Connected helps female veterans with transitioning back into civilian life after their service.

“They will get financial literacy classes, job skill training, resume writing, interviewing skills, nutrition classes,” said Phyllis Abbott with Lady Veterans Connect. “We want them to feel confident and say 'yes, I served and I do deserve to be recognized and I deserve to have my needs met.'"

Home Depot has made it their service project for the year to help with the renovations.

The project is being funded solely by donations.
