Lawmakers Working On Bill To Control Deer Population

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, Ky (LEX 18) Kentucky lawmakers are working on a new bill that would open up hunting to problem areas where there are more deer-related car accidents.

Kentucky's deer population is thriving. Fish and Wildlife officials say that the deer population is close to 900,000.

“Overpopulated with deer and they cause conflicts with people,” said Mark Marraccini with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.

With such a high population, they are more likely to bolt across a Kentucky highway, possibly causing damage to cars and injuries to those inside.

Frankfort lawmakers are working on Senate Bill 83 which would allow deer hunters more opportunities in the field, such as special hunts or issuance of more hunting tags.

“There are some areas near Shakertown where the hunting pressure, the hunting activity probably could be a little stronger,” said Marraccini.

Marraccini said that with the new bill, officials could target problem areas with deer-related car accidents and open up hunting in that specific site to tone down the growth.

“Hunting is the, is the number one tool, the primary tool, that wildlife officials use to manage the wildlife population,” said Marraccini.

Deer hunting already has a $450 million economic impact on the state and supports 15,000 jobs.

“Opportunity for hunters to get in the field closer to home, and to pursue their activity,” said Marraccini.
