FRANKFORT, Ky - The Governor has signed a bill that stiffens penalties for people who hurt police K-9s into law.

House Bill 93 makes it so that anyone who kills or seriously injures a police dog on purpose or wantonly injures the dogs with a deadly weapon will be charged with a felony count of assault on a service animal.

Under the old law, the offense was only a felony if the dog died or couldn't return to work. The change was prompted by the case of "Ernie," a police dog in Covington, who was shot twice and made a full recovery.

The man charged with the crime did not serve time for hurting Ernie, but did go to prison on other charges.
