Teen With Cancer Has One Birthday Wish

Posted: Updated:

IRVINE, Ky. (LEX 18) - The family of an Estill County teen fighting cancer is hoping the community can give him the unique birthday present he's wishing for after a tough few years.

Along Pea Ridge Road in Irvine, Aaron Stamper's family is still hanging on after every challenge thrown its way. From cancer to car wrecks, they're doing what they can to keep the lights on.

"It's been a hard two years, it's been rough," said Diane Stamper. "There's days I don't know if we can get through it or not, but we just have people pray for us."

Diane Stamper said those prayer requests first came in April of 2014. Just two days before her son Aaron's 13th birthday, doctors diagnosed him with acute lymphoblastic t-cell 2 leukemia.

A year later, tragedy struck the family again. This time, Stamper's 19-year old son Ethan died in a car wreck on Tates Creek Road

For the whole family, this April will be bittersweet.

"I'm dreading it very much because we need to celebrate Aaron's birthday, but at the same time, we'll be celebrating the anniversary for his [Ethan's]  death too," Stamper said.

While Aaron continues to fight cancer, his mother wants to make his 16th birthday, coming up on April 2, special.

She said all he wants are a mailbox full of birthday cards.

"I just like to collect them," said Aaron Stamper. "When I get older I want to put them in a book so I can remember them all, remember how hard things were."

It's a small request, but Stamper said each card gives him the courage to keep fighting.

"It would mean a great deal to know it would bring him joy," said Diane Stamper.

Since this story first aired, many people have reached out to the family. Employees at the Fayette County School Bus Garage are sending cards. They started a car show as a fundraiser six years ago for the American Cancer Society and they have asked Aaron to be the guest of honor this year. Kim Webb, the organizer of the fundraiser, said that her coworkers started the car show when she was diagnosed with cancer.

"Keep the fight, keep the faith, my friend. You can get there. You can battle it. you can win," said Webb.

Aaron's story also caught the eye of Lexington photographer Sasha Owens who hopes her talent can help the family.

"That's all it takes, is one or two good photos, just one photo can ease a lot of tension, change a lot of feelings," said Owens.

Birthday cards can be sent to Aaron at his home:

The StormTracker threat index remains at 1 Tuesday, a slight risk. More accumulating snow will lead to slick, snow covered roads and potentially hazardous driving conditions- use caution on your commute. Much colder air tracked in overnight behind an Arctic front and with moisture still streaming northeast higher snow ratios will lead to more snow mainly in the morning in the Bluegrass and shifting southeast later in the day.
