Man Identified, Charged After Officer-Involved Shooting

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - The identity of the man who was taken to the hospital after this week's officer-involved shooting has been released.

According to a courthouse citation, Sergei Sargaev, 26, of Lexington, is facing charges of First Degree Wanton Endangerment and First Degree Criminal Mischief.

He entered not guilty pleas to both of those charges Thursday.

Police tell LEX 18 that an officer was following up on reports of narcotics activity in the Stanton Way area, near the La Quinta Inn off Newtown Pike, about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Court documents said the officer made contact with Sargaev and asked multiple times for him to open his door or roll down the window.

Police said Sargaev backed into the officer's cruiser causing more than $1,000 in damage.

At some point, the officer fired shots, at least one of which struck Sargaev.

Sargaev is a Ukrainian-born man living in Lexington. His bond is $8,000.

The officer involved is a three-year veteran of the Lexington Police Department. Police say he has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

According to police, the officer was wearing a body camera. Video of the incident will be reviewed by investigators and the Commonwealth's Attorney office.

The last officer-involved shooting involving Lexington Police was back in November 2014. It was also non-fatal.
