Police: Owner Charged After Dog Attacks Woman

Posted: Updated:

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (EKB) -- An alleged dog attack in Pikeville has resulted in misdemeanor charges and the arrest of the animal’s owner.

According to East Kentucky Broadcasting, 70-year-old Bobby Sturgill, of Williams Hollow in Pikeville, was arrested Monday after his dog attacked a passerby in the street outside of Sturgill’s residence. Court documents said the victim told police the dog attacked while Sturgill watched and took no action.

The woman was able to fight free and was later taken to Pikeville Medical Center for dog-bite injuries to her leg. The dog was seized by Pike County Animal Control, and Sturgill was charged with second-degree wanton endangerment and owner permitting a vicious dog to run at large.

Sturgill was released from the Pike County Detention Center after posting bond. The victim in the case was treated for what police characterized as “bad” puncture wounds.

The dog remains in the custody of animal control.
