Man Sentenced To Life In Overdose Case

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) -- A Lexington man has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in a fentanyl overdose case.

Joshua Ewing, 28, was sentenced in federal court Monday for his role in the death of Jeremy Deaton. Deaton overdosed in the garage of his home in 2016. His body was found by his then 10-year-old son.

Under federal law, if you are convicted of distributing drugs that result in an overdose death, you face a minimum of 20 years in prison and potential for life.  If you have a prior drug felony conviction a mandatory sentence of life is given.

Deaton's brother, Christopher, wants people to realize the culpability of drug dealers.

"Drug dealing has to stop. We have to do more in this country. Certainly, the U.S. Attorney's office here has a large hammer and the drug dealers need to understand if they're going to continue to pedal this poison, they will very likely find themselves in this courtroom in the same situation," Deaton told LEX 18.
