High School Softball Player Injured When Hit In The Face

Posted: Updated:

UNION COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) A Union County High School softball player is recovering after a softball going more than 70 miles an hour hit her in the face.

Senior Evyn Hendrickson threw a pitch and when the ball was hit, it came back and hit her in the face.  The hit was caught on camera.

“She was able to get her head turned slightly, so that it did hit her solid and ricochet off but luckily not straight on to her face,” said Union County High School Athletic Director Jeremy Tackett.

The ball is projected to have been moving anywhere between 70-90 miles an hour.

Hendrickson was airlifted to a hospital in Evansville. Her face was broken in multiple places.

While her mind is on her recovery, it is also on preventing this from happening to other girls.

School officials confirmed that Hendrickson is the third player in her region to be hit in the face by a line drive in just one month. She wanted to see protective face masks made mandatory for high school softball pitchers.

Hendrickson will have to undergo a surgery as a result of her injuries, but school officials say she is already anxious to get back out on the field.
