Pikeville Doctor Has Close Encounter With Paris Gunman

Posted: Updated:

PARIS (LEX 18/EKB) -- A Pikeville Doctor expected a calm, relaxing vacation when she visited Paris with her family. What unfolded just feet in front of her was anything but relaxing.

Dr. Angela Maggard had only been in Paris for four hours when she and her husband and sons were walking down the Champs-Elysees to their hotel Thursday evening when suddenly a man with a machine gun opened fire on the crowded tourist street.

"He began firing and I screamed 'Run!' to everyone around me."

That's when the terrorist pointed the gun towards two responding police officers. One of the officers was killed. The other injured.

The Champs-Elysees is a very popular tourist attraction with the Arc de Triomphe and multiple high-end stores. Dr. Maggard and her family ran into a store where they were ushered into a basement area.

They waited, hour after hour, with police coming down to update them on when it would be safe for them to exit the premises.

"They made us line up in a line and walk quickly with our hands up. No noises. And as we were exiting the building they shot the gunman," Dr. Maggard told East Kentucky Broadcasting.

Those moments, Maggard said, were scarier than the initial attack.

The family made it safe and sound back to their hotel, but the trauma made for a difficult night's sleep.

Dr. Maggard says that in the initial, frenzied moments of the attack, the terrorist made eye contact with her. A loud noise in the middle of the night startled her and she woke up screaming.

"I could picture the man with the gun in front of me. He was literally right in front of me. He looked right at me with the machine gun," Dr. Maggard says.

Maggard's daughter Maranda, a student at Georgetown college, was frantically attempting to get ahold of mother after the attack. She posted multiple status updates throughout the night.

"My parents just called me. Both of my parents actually witnessed the shooting, which took down one policeman before they sought immediate shelter. As a result, the whole family is a little shaken up, but have safely returned to their hotel. I appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers for their safety and for others'. Please continue to pray for everyone who witnessed this horrific scene and all else affected. Also, please pray for a safe return for my family," Maranda wrote.

Dr. Maggard says her love of Paris won't be diminished as there was more good than evil in the city.

"It's a beautiful city and the people were so good to us," she says.
