Layoffs At Renfro Valley Worries Residents, Employees

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (LEX18)-- Renfro Valley Entertainment Center has been a staple of country music for nearly eight decades.

But after the news of nearly a dozen people being laid off from the Rockcastle County attraction, some visitors wonder what the future holds.

"When you said 'renfro, I live next to renfro,' everyone knew where that was at," said Mount Vernon resident, Joanna McClure.

Many in town heard about the surprise layoffs, leaving a dozen members of Renfro Valley's seasonal staff without jobs.

This includes members of the house band, who received a letter stating: "Effective immediately your services are no longer needed. We have no choice but to go in a different direction in order for the old barn to survive."

Residents say it's a sign of the bad economy hitting the 78-year-old business.

"A lot of businesses moved out because they're not getting any traffic down there," McClure said.

The staff says this past weekend was still busy, with plenty other big names lined up for the tourist season.

"We need to build it back up like it was at one time," McClure said.
