UK Students Working With NASA To Live Stream Great American Solar Eclipse

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) This August, the sun, the moon, and the Earth will combine for the Great American Solar Eclipse and a group of NASA Engineers is working with students at the University of Kentucky so that the eclipse will be available for worldwide view via the internet.

On August 21st, the moon's shadow will completely block out the sun from Oregon to South Carolina and Kentucky will have the longest time in totality.

Several talented engineering students from UK are working on a once in a lifetime project led.

“It's never been done before. Across the nation, it's coast to coast. There are about 60 teams that have the same equipment in order to live stream the eclipse from the edge of space,” said Mission Control Leader Virginia Smith.

She said they started by sticking GoPros in a Styrofoam box and then grew into a more complicated system.

“It takes video from our camera here and streams it to the ground station and what we're trying to do is live stream from about 90 or 100 thousand feet,” said Smith.

NASA has contributed nearly $100,000 for UK's part in this project.

The students are learning from the best.

“It's pretty awesome. It's one of the most fun things is telling people, Hey, I'm doing a project working on the eclipse and trying to get video of the eclipse with NASA.,” said Smith.

Even when they get all the logistics worked out on August 21st, there is still one thing they can't control, the weather.

They are not allowed to fly if there is more than 50% cloud cover. They must also accommodate for wind.

When the eclipse happens remember, you cannot look directly at the sun, you'll need at least a number 14 Welder's glass or special eclipse glasses.
