LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore sensation Katie Reed was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association All-Region Team, the organization announced on Thursday morning. The St. Louis, Missouri native was named First Team All-Southeastern Conference two weeks ago – and becomes the fourth shortstop in Kentucky program history to be named an All-Region shortstop.
Reed is currently the team leader on offense for the Wildcats, hitting .351 on the season with three home runs and 21 RBI. She has 65 hits on the season, which leads UK by 14 – 10 doubles and 14 stolen bases.
Defensively, Reed has been even better for the Wildcats, sliding over to shortstop this season after playing the entirety of her freshman season at second base. Reed has a .965 fielding percentage this season, and has committed just seven errors all season – the best fielding percentage and lowest error total for and starting shortstop in the SEC.
A brilliant student, as well, Reed has a 4.0 GPA and spoke at the opening of the Jacobs Science Building on campus back in the fall.
With Reed joining the All-Region Team, Kentucky has now had at least one honoree in each of the last five years, and in nine of the 10 years that head coach Rachel Lawson has been in charge of the program. Reed becomes the fourth different shortstop to garner All-Region honors, joining Brooke Marnitz (2007), Molly Johnson-Belcher (2009, 10) and Kara Dill (2011).
Kentucky opens play in the 2017 NCAA Softball Championships on Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET against DePaul. The game will be shown live on ESPN3 with Jenn Hildreth (pxp) and Carol Bruggeman (color) on the call from John Cropp Stadium in Lexington.
