Students Raise Money For Crossing Guard

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - Students at Mary Todd Elementary came together to raise money for the crossing guard at their school.

On the day before the last day of school, a hoard of students rushed towards the crosswalk where James Thompson, known to everyone as Mr. Jimmy, volunteers as a crossing guard everyday after school.

At 82 years old, Thompson stays dedicated to the safety of all students. He is also a dedicated husband who takes care of his disabled wife who is currently on dialysis.

Several days ago, fifth grader Kynedi Birdsong, along with her two friends, decided they wanted to start a fundraiser to say thank you to Mr. Jimmy and help his financial situation.

On Thursday afternoon, they, along with many other classmates, presented Mr. Jimmy with $105 and an O'Charley's gift card, along with a grill and lawnmower donated by Lowes.

"I told them I was pushing that lawnmower and I got too old to push it," said Thompson, caught by surprise by the students' generosity. "They must've heard me. Somebody up there likes me."

Thompson said he plans to continue volunteering as a crossing guard as long as he is able to.
