Kindergarten Student Writes Poem About Being A Cop

Posted: Updated:

LINCOLN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) - It's National Police Week and for one member of Stanford Elementary School's graduating kindergarten class, the celebration took on a whole new meaning.

No one really knows what will eventually become of the graduating kindergarteners of Stanford Elementary School, with perhaps on exception.

Drake Lane has a dream of one day becoming a cop. He started thinking about it when he was three.

Now that he's five, he wrote about it as part of a state-wide contest. His poem was so well received, it got top billing out of more than 1,100 entries.

"I was really surprised that it was so well put together, and he was able to win this award. It's impressive, and I'm really proud of him," said Mitchell Lane, Drake's father.

His dad wasn't alone, Trooper Dustin Hon is among those just as impressed and proud.

"In the recent past, police have gotten have gotten a lot of bad publicity, and things like this are definitely a positive," the trooper said.

So is that reward the state presented as a little something to stash away for college, or maybe just to help with his dream.

Drake received $1,000 to put toward his Kentucky 529 College Plan. Stanford Elementary got a $500 check for cultivating the winning submission.
