Community Steps Up After Wheelchair Ramp Stolen From Home

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - A number of Lex 18 Viewers offered help after a wheelchair ramp was swiped right from a Lexington couple's front door.

Sharon Wells loves sitting outside this time of year alongside her husband who is confined to a wheelchair.

"Even with the two steps, it's not easy to take a wheelchair down two steps," said Wells.

That's why they bought a wheelchair ramp for their door. But for now, he's stuck inside because of a problem Sharon realized when she returned from a shopping trip.

"The first thing that I noticed when I pulled up is I no longer have a wheelchair ramp," said Wells.

She says someone walked up to her door, and stole the aluminum ramp.

"I guess somebody needed it worse than we did," said Wells.

Both Sharon and her husband are retired on disability, so the $150 it costs to buy a new ramp are hard to come by.

"Very disturbing knowing that my husband was here by himself, and him being handicapped. Them being so close to my doors in broad daylight and taking something like that," said Wells.

She did call the police, who filed a report and said they'd be on the lookout for the ramp.

On Friday, a number of Lex 18 viewers called hoping to help. In the afternoon, Ken and Holly Grayson dropped off an old wheelchair ramp to the Wells family.

"We had a ramp in the garage that my father-in-law used," said Ken Grayson. "I thought it was the perfect place for it."

"It gave me a little bit of faith in humanity again," said Sharon Wells, after the Graysons left. "Somebody out there cares about other people more than themselves."
