Child Found Wandering Down Road

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (Corbin/Whitley News Journal)-- A four-year-old boy was found wandering alone about one-quarter mile from his home off U.S. 25W Wednesday afternoon.

His mother, Barbara Vanderpool, 24, was arrested for endangering the welfare of a minor.

Police said this was the third time this year that the child has been found wandering alone.

When they arrived at the scene, witnesses had the child off to the side of the road, according to an arrest citation.

The child told police that his mama, who is actually his great-grandmother, said he could walk to Wal-Mart.

Police said the child’s great-grandmother is neither physically nor mentally able to care for the child. They added that upon arriving at the residence, the mother was not there.

When police finally spoke to the mother of the child, she told them that she left the child with her grandmother, so she could go spend a couple of nights with her dad.

Vanderpool was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center, but has since been released on bond.

Police say that social services turned the child over to Vanderpool’s mother.
