WILMORE, Ky. — Asbury University’s ImpactU summer academic camps wrap up today, but for more than 150 high school students who explored new academic areas and experienced Asbury’s vibrant Christian community, the real impact has just begun.

Offering camps ranging from Film to Equine to Brass Music, ImpactU is a residential, college-type experience on Asbury’s campus that challenges high school students to explore new academic areas, share ideas across disciplines and build meaningful relationships.

“I love the ability to work with other people and the energy you get from that,” said Joe Murner, a senior from Lexington, Ky. who attended his third ImpactU camp. “I like having the college experience, too — living on campus and in dorms.”

Murner was one of many students producing films in Asbury’s Miller Center for Communication Arts on Thursday. Divided into teams, students had a specific tasks to complete on set in order to deliver films on time.

“I’m the screenwriter for my team,” Murner said. “This camp shows the collaborative role of filmmaking — working with others and getting ideas, being open and making sure everyone contributes.”

For a second year, Asbury offered Youth Becoming Leaders, a (YBL), a two-week camp in theology and leadership. Funded by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment, YBL encouraged students to interact with scripture and theological texts, participate in service projects and think through global issues.
Grant Alsbrooks, a senior from Bel Air, Maryland, says YBL challenged him to think more deeply about issues of worldview and to develop deep friendships with other YBL participants. Alsbrooks’ service project, which will be completed this summer, connects youth from his home church with ministry opportunities in inner city Baltimore.

“The community that’s formed here is unreal,” Alsbrooks said. “You get to spend two weeks with these guys, and it’s life-changing — not only the community that you form with the other students, but the relationship that you experience with Jesus Christ, and how that grows.”
In addition to challenging students to hone new skills in an academic area, ImpactU encourages students to explore their callings and to identify areas in which they can use their gifts to impact the world.

“This event is about long-term impact,” said Dr. Bill Hall, vice president for Enrollment Management at Asbury. “At ImpactU, students encounter ideas and develop skills that can result not only in personal transformation, but can also make a difference in the lives of others. It’s an introduction to the full Asbury experience — equipping students, through academic excellence and spiritual vitality, to impact the world for Christ.”
