YMCA of Central Kentucky swimmer selected to attend USA Swimming’s Annual Diversity Select Camp and Summit

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY (June 21, 2017) – YMCA of Central Kentucky swimmer Amina El-Amin, a seventh grader from Edythe J. Hayes Middle School is one of 40 up-and-coming athletes to attend the USA Swimming’s Annual Southern Zone Diversity Select Camp and Summit to be held June 22-25 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, NC.

El-Amin, an eight-year veteran of the North Lexington Family YMCA Tiger Sharks Swim Team is the first YMCA of Central Kentucky swimmer to attend this annual USA Swimming camp and the only female from Kentucky to attend. Amina El-Amin had to qualify for the USA Swimming Kentucky State Championship in order to be considered for this camp.

The purpose of the camp is to create an atmosphere of motivation and educational opportunities for athletes of underrepresented cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic groups to develop the necessary leadership skills to achieve excellence in their sport and their home communities. The Zone Diversity Select Camps are viewed as an integral step for athletes to move from the local and Zone level onto to the national scene.

“What I love about Amina is her drive. She has clear goals and she wants to attain those,” said North Lexington Family YMCA Swim Team Head Coach Matt Vogelpohl. “Now that she is getting older, all the training and parts of her strokes are starting to click. She can now tell me what she needs to work on after a race or what didn't go right. Most swimmers don't figure that out until later in their teenage years, but Amina figured it out this year at 13. I am very proud of her and all she has accomplished,” said Vogelpohl.

Amina’s best times this season were 26.55 in the 50y freestyle and 58.99 in the 100y freestyle. At this camp, El-Amin will receive multiple practices a day, private lesson instructions, dry land and in classroom video training and technique discussions. “Winning! I just love to win!” said El-Amin.
