You Can Still Register For Midsummer Night's Run

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) -- For 33 years, Lexingtonians and people from surrounding areas alike, have occupied downtown Lexington for Baptist Health Lexington’s A Midsummer Night’s Run presented by Quantrell Subaru which has grown to more than 4,000 annual participants.

The second Saturday of August has been designated on many people’s calendar. The annual, exclusive downtown Lexington night race is not one folks want to miss. Baptist Health Lexington’s A Midsummer Night’s Run has become more of an all-around family event that culminates with a 5K.

That’s not to suggest people are not competitive, though.

After taking home the overall award last year in his first A Midsummer Night’s Run, Berea native Joseph Mullen once again has his calendar marked—this time to defend his title.

Through participants in years prior, Mullen heard nothing but positivity about the race so decided to give it a try last year. Mullen said he was aiming for a sub-15-minute time, but the muggy conditions and being his first race of the season perhaps presented more of a test than anticipated.

Although Mullen did not reach his personal goal last year, his time of 15 minutes and 18 seconds was the one to beat.

Now, Mullen again has his goal to complete the 3.1-mile course in less than 15 minutes. And if his training thus far is any indicator, he will do that easily.

“Last year I was coming off a knee surgery to repair meniscus, so coming back I didn’t have much of a base,” said Mullen. “So far, I’ve broken 15 a couple times so I should definitely improve my time this year.”

And if Mullen breaks the 15-minute mark, it will mark just the 16th occurrence in the race record book.

The top male and female overall times were both set in 1989. Jim Estes’ 14:14 is the top time in the male category, while Camille Forrester’s 16:27 is the fastest women’s time recorded.

Mullen and thousands of others will venture the course for Saturday, August 12th for this year’s event.

The Fastest Kid in Town race presented by Buchart Orthodontics will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the One Mile Fun Run/Walk presented by State Farm Insurance beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Vendors will be on site and photos with William Shakespeare will be available. Live music will begin at 6 p.m. and continue into the night.
