LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) - On Friday, former Lexington councilwoman Sasha Love Higgins pleaded guilty to one count of identity theft and one count of theft of services under $10,000.
The former councilwoman also pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges. The case is related to her former job as manager of a hotel.
The investigation began with a report of identity theft back in early January. Court documents said that Higgins, while working as the manager of Hampton Inn, continued to issue fraudulent checks to a former employee months after she left. The ex-employee's husband contacted Higgins to ask about the checks and she admitted that she had continued to issue the checks. The husband recorded that phone call and sent it to Lexington Police.
The checks amounted to over $4,000, police said Higgins asked the company to set up a MetaBank account in the former employee's name which documents say Higgins used to funnel that money for her own personal use.
Higgins will be sentenced on October 5.
