Lexington Prepares For Perseids Meteor Shower

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) It's a big month for astronomy here in Kentucky. The state is preparing for the Great American Eclipse and people are preparing for the Perseids Meteor Shower that will rain over skies in the Bluegrass.

The City of Lexington will hold a meteor shower watch party at the Raven Run Sanctuary from 9-11 p.m. Saturday. They say that people should bring lawn chairs.

"I have never seen one before, but I think it would be a fun environment for everyone to have fun and enjoy, whatever is about to happen," said Rebecca Coleman, who is excited about the meteors.

For the best visibility of the Perseids Meteor Shower, try to avoid the bright lights of the city. On average, it is estimated that people should see between 50 to 60 meteors every hour.

Educators at the Hummel Planetarium said that the moon might make it difficult to see.

"It's a waning gibbous, there was a full moon not too long ago. With the moon being so bright, it's going to hide some of the meteors from the shower," said Aida Bermudez, an educator at the Hummel Planetarium.
